    Great post. I think the question of what sort of wisdom you are looking for from crowds is also important. For example with music you might be prepared to tolerate a lot of noise in the recommendation engine because there is great personal value in finding an amazing new band and you can sample easily and quickly to make the final filter easily yourself. Last.fm could profitably add a feature allowing you to crank up or down the number of recommendations to vary the number of suggestions to relevancy function. This is different from the guess the weight of an ox type examples that Surowiecki gives.
